The Tannery Arts Center is dedicated to providing an affordable, accessible and sustainable home for the Arts in Santa Cruz County.
The vision for the Tannery Arts Center is to create a home for the arts in Santa Cruz County dedicated to creating opportunities for individual artists and arts organizations, residents and visitors to create, explore, perform, exhibit, learn and enjoy the Arts.
The Tannery Arts Center will be built in three phases. Phase I, The Tannery Artist's Lofts Live Work Housing, has just begun construction. Phase II is the Working Studios and Phase III will be the Performing Arts Center.
Tannery Arts Center Overview
The Tannery Arts Center is a joint project being developed by the City of Santa Cruz, Artspace Projects, Inc. a nationally acclaimed nonprofit developer of affordable space for artists and arts organizations and a local nonprofit, The Tannery Arts Center, Inc. The development project will provide living, working, display and educational spaces for artists, arts organizations and the community. Once completed the Tannery Arts Center will convert the historic Salz Tannery into an affordable home for the Arts in Santa Curz County. The project is composed of the following components;
Artists' Live/Work housing
100 new units of affordable housing will be constructed for artists and their families. Apartments will range in size from studio to 3 bedrooms and rent to families with low and very low incomes at very reasonable rates. Apartments will have high ceilings, durable surfaces and plenty of natural light and additional floor space to allow for a studio area.
Working Studios
Up to 35,000 square feet of working studio space will be crated by renovating the historic buildings of the old tannery factory. These studio spaces will have high ceilings, durable surfaces and plenty of natural light. With the help of grants and low interest loans rental rates will be affordable to local artists.
Tannery History Exhibit
Five buildings of historical significance will be preserved and the history of the tannery will be told through a collection of exhibits through out the Tannery Arts Center. 145 years of history will be displayed on the "Wall of History" and in exhibits integrated into the whole site.
Performing Arts Center
A complex of buildings surrounding the main courtyard will include a 150 seat Theater with flexible seating, a variety of staging opportunities and back stage and support space along with Rehearsal spaces for dance music and drama.
Office space and meeting rooms with dependably affordable rates for local non-profit arts organizations will help them sustain their programs for the community. Classrooms for teaching art, music, dance and drama will provide an off campus opportunity for Cabrillo College and UCSC and affordable space for local artists and arts organizations to teach the art of creativity. A Café/Restaurant, shops and a gallery will add to the public spaces welcoming visitors to the Tannery Arts Center.
Santa cruz ballet theatre
The Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre will build a permanent home for its Ballet School with 3 large ballet studios with high ceilings and abundant natural light and dressing rooms, office space and storage for Santa Cruz's primer local ballet company.
Additional features
* A pedestrian promenade will link four outdoor courtyards, the Main Courtyard, Theater Courtyard, Working Studios Courtyard and Sculpture Garden and the Kron House Garden tying the Tannery Arts Center together in a pedestrian friendly way.
* Access to the San Lorenzo River
∑ Bike path and pedestrian link to the river levy walk connecting the Tannery Arts Center to downtown Santa Cruz.
